Your Worst Fear To The Rescue
I love irony. Particularly when it strikes at the heart of what we assume to be true regarding race. When many people envision young African-American men they may think of the criminally-inclined, indifferent, basketball-playing stereotypes pictured above. Black men, particularly when in groups of two or more, are generally viewed as dangerous even by other blacks.
My friend John emailed me a clip from the Today Show that I needed to share. The title of the segment is "Stranger Danger: Would Anyone Help Your Child?" In it, "Security Specialist" Bill Stanton tests the general publics' reaction to a possible child abduction. Unfortunately, most of the people who witnessed this 'kidnapping' kept right on walking. Not terribly surprising. Finally, however, two gentlemen did stop and take action. Guess what they looked like.

That video was extremely alarming. But that is another issue altogether. In response to your post I noted two things when I watched the video.... The two young black men could easily have fit into the negative "dangerous street thug" stereotype due to their urban attire and I'm sure that the reporters were shocked that they were the only ones who reacted so quickly and effectively.
Secondly, after the the experiment was revealed to the rescuers they interviewed them and they were very well spoken and articulate. We just don't see that often in the media. You know they end up airing comments from the most ignorant and destitute black man or woman that they can find. And that individual is supposed to represent "our views" on the particular topic, discussion, or event.
It goes to show that the black man is still considered inferior, dangerous, and a non-factor in today’s society. What is sickening is the fact that it seemed like a surprise that the all the "White Folks" did not stop but it was a surprise when the black men stopped. When will things ever change. Great material. Keep up the good work.
Well, i know im late on this one, but im at work so i just backtracking. yes, i agree with everyone. its has always been that way and always will be. we will never get the respect we deserve for everything we do to make america like it is. i would have ran that video on fox, nbc, abc, cbs, heck i would have ran it on espn, but no matter how much good we go, and ppl we help, it'll will still be just that...THUGS came to help. why does it have to thugs? but thats another issue. america will never change, we are in white america.....period....
